We were able to take 10 wrestlers to the University Freestyle Nationals. I was pleased to have guys representing the Patriot Elite Wrestling Club. I believe the experience of training for the competition and competing will help the guys down the road. We had 4 guys win matches and we were pleased to see Vince Rodriguez finish in 6th place. The tournament is tough, so having Vince place was a good sign for his future.
Having our club in place and designated a regional training site for USA Wrestling was a positive step forward for our program. We were also able to have some combined practices with American and Maryland as we were all preparing for University Nationals. I love the fact we are close enough to other schools, so guys can get varied work out partners and coaching.
Most of our team has limited experience in Freestyle and Greco-Roman, so our guys have lots to learn. I think training Freestyle and Greco-Roman helped keep the guys fresh this spring. It was a nice change of pace. We were unable to send any of the guys to the University Greco-Roman Nationals due to lack of staff and funding. Nevertheless, the guys trained some Greco-Roman this spring and I hope to have them compete in Greco-Roman in the near future.
Learning the international styles can help the guys as college wrestlers. They learn different techniques, learn mat strategy, and use it as a cross-training workout.
After we returned from the University Nationals, the Patriot Club hosted their annual alumni golf outing. I was pleased to see some of our alums on the course. We actually had the most alums at the golf outing which will help us financially. 10% of the proceeds from the event will go directly to our budget as a result of being the top team in alumni participation. The remainder of the proceeds will go to the general scholarship fund. Thus, we will benefit there as well. It was a great day for Mason athletics. The only downside to the day was I won an autographed basketball in the silent auction. I admit to bidding on the basketball, but my intent was only to drive up the price.
We are almost done with the recruiting class. Hopefully we will announce it soon. I am also done with the schedule and now only awaiting the signed contracts. Once the contracts are signed, we will announce next years schedule.
Our camps will start next month, so we are busy preparing for them – Team Camp July 8-12; Technique Camp July 8-12 and a Father/Son Camp July 13-14.
